Big scare at the dyno yesterday
04/03/18 7:31 AM

While my bike was in the midst of the 2nd pull I saw the operator reach down and grab the shift lever by hand. Turns out he couldn't get it to go into any gear. He shuts the bike off and is moving the shift shaft in and out about an inch. All I'm thinking is why didn't I stay at home and how I'm going to get my wifes truck and my trailer from 2 different locations...hp be damned ! I'm able to ride it 20 miles home by hand shifting. At first I didn't even want to look at it since my warranty expired 8 days ago ! After looking at the shaft I see the c clip has somehow popped out of the groove allowing the shaft to move away from the drum. I must have installed a half dozen of those over the years but my mind was too far gone to think of anything but the 10,000 dollar pile I was going to have to move around the garage all summer. One of the first things I did was order a billet oil pump cover and gasket for a piece of mind since I'm gonna open it up and see if the shaft was chewed on by the clutch basket.

I can't see how anything would have fallen apart inside. The only possible thing would be the tiny spring on the jaws of the shift arm. That might not effect operation at all and it would just get washed down into the sump anyway, maybe after rolling through the steel teeth of the big planetary gear. If it shifts good with the shaft in the proper position, I'll bet everything is fine. I don't think the shift arm spring (the bigger spring) could have slipped off the pin with the clutch installed. Maybe the back of your clutch basket got scored a little. No biggy. It wears from the clutch plate tangs and there's no reason to bother wit that until it's severe which is probably never.

If the groove the external circlip goes in is worn, that might let the circlip pop out. Mine has worn on the side against the engine only so if it slips out, it's only going to slip back in. Time for a new one though when I change clutch plates.

You got an oil pump cover that comes with a gasket?? I didn't know they had that. Good idea if there is room for that on the machined surface.

Or did you mean clutch cover gasket?? I would not bother to change that the first time you pull the clutch cover off. Only if it has a severe gap or tear in it. It should last at least a few times and it's a PITA to remove. Also a touchy job to install a new OEM one. I used a fiber one. Anyway, I hear many manufacturers don't use a clutch cover gasket anymore. Te machining is that smooth.

If you do, OEM is basically like a film of thick vinyl. You'll see when you take the cover off. I heard they're a bear to install. Nice and thin but I'm curious how they go on without getting torn or crooked. Do they have a light adhesive on one side? Never tried one yet. I'd order a fiber one for a backup cuz you might need it.

The used clutch cover I ordered off of Ebay had a gasket that looked not too bad but I decided to replace it. I don't know if it's even necessary to remove the old one but I did. Plastic scraper and fingernail. A little solvent.

Step 4 here.

It seems impossible that the circlip could have fallen off unless it was cracked or something and it finally broke.

C and E clips are say... punched out of sheet metal and end up with a cut side and a round side to the finished product. Cut side or flat side is placed towards the thrust side, meaning, look at the shift shaft's groove. The cut side faces the shift lever or the knurled side. The thrust is going to move into the clutch basket so the cut is going to be flat to flat and hold. If you had the round side facing the shifter, the round would climb over the flat of the shaft. The same goes with the C clips for the transmission shafts. If a forked gear slides into a freewheeling gear, the cut side faces away from the freewheeler, because the forked gear is thrusting at that gear... think.

If a C or E clip spins on the shaft... buy new. Yes you can tighten the gap and close the gap some, and/or twist the gaps so the clip lays flat on a surface before installing so it shows no stress load. When dragging the clip over the shaft, hardly open the gap and let the clip drag on the shaft. If it spins, you bent it open.

Thanks, Hub! More great pearls of wisdom from the master! Love those tidbits of knowledge!

So if a C clip is a circlip shaped like a C, WTH is an E clip?

Is that like when the moon covers the sun?

An e clip doesn't need snap ring pliers. Just a thin blade flat screwdriver.

oh shiste one of those things! I just googled it. Yeah, believe it or not, it really does look like an E.

OK and an eclipse just needs welding goggles or a hole in a piece of paper.

Hey, hag, what do you think about the last post here? the drill hole location/meter bracket strength question?

had it happen on my zx10.. zx14 is setup say way. c-clip came off of gear shift lever allowing it to move in and out. its an easy fix but you do have to drop oil pan to access shift lever from bottom side as it slides thru bottom of cases to install clip. Just check shift start to make sure there is no damage. it can also damage oil pump gear if not caught in time..

If it is just the outer C clip, you don't need to disassemble anything on a ZX-14. Just remove the shift pedal and put the clip back on. If the inner C clip fell off, you would need to take the clutch out. Removing the oil pan would be the hard way to do it on the 14. You might want to do that to get the C-clip out though.
